Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, is a vibrant and historic metropolis perched on the Atlantic coast. The city blends traditional heritage and contemporary culture, featuring charming neighborhoods like Alfama, Baixa, Bairro Alto, and Belém, each with its unique character. Lisbon is known for its pastel-colored buildings, tiled facades (azulejos), street trams, scenic miradouros (viewpoints), and its connection to maritime discoveries. Its rich history spans Roman, Moorish, and Age of Discovery influences, embedded in iconic landmarks such as the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, São Jorge Castle, and the Lisbon Cathedral (Sé). Lisbon’s tram lines, Fado music, lively squares (like Praça do Comércio), and riverside walkways along the Tagus River add to its appeal.
The Lisbon Region is a dynamic mix of urban and natural landscapes. To the west lies the Atlantic coastline with beaches (Cascais, Costa da Caparica, and Sintra’s scenic coastline). Inland, the region hosts the cultural and historical treasures of Sintra, with its palaces and forests; Cascais, a seaside town with charm and maritime tradition; and Arrábida, a natural park with striking landscapes. The Lisbon Metropolitan Area also comprises a range of cultural, gastronomical, and outdoor experiences, making it an ideal base for conference attendees to explore before or after the event.
